In April of 2013, I meandered through the rows of items in the silent auction: vacation getaways, spa treatments, handbags, jewelry, and…a month of unlimited classes at the Bar Method. I had never heard of it. I asked a friend standing near me – what is this? “Oh!” she said “that workout will make your legs shake… and I mean shake!”

The Bachelor (2013) One of my main reasons for starting Bar Method was for a “lifted seat” (Bar Method’s term)

my arms and a stronger, tighter core.

The Bar Method should come with the following disclaimer:

Warning- may cause the following: an inflated sense of butt confidence, increased comfort with breathing heavily on others, endless requests to your friends to touch your muscles and watch you flex, increased comfort with lifting your shirt to show anyone your new abs, increased comfort with putting your feet on any countertop to show others your stretch, daily facebook affirmations, a growing attachment to the owners, instructors and classmates which you may imprint on in roles such as your mother, sister, friend, coach or mentor. Side effects will increase in severity as you progress as a student of Bar Method.

I signed-up for the New Client 30 day trial.  I was going to see how effective Bar Method really was during that 1 month, so I diligently came 5 times a week for that first month.  In that month I started to see less of a muffin top, stronger legs and a lifted seat.  It was working and I was hooked! … Fast forward 2 1/2 years and I’m still going 5 days a week. However, now my motivation is not to get into shape (because I already am), but to stay strong. I no longer suffer from lower back pain because my legs are made of dense muscle so I can stand steady, my core is strong to help support my back and my posture is improved to help me stand tall. I don’t know what I would do without Bar Method.

Before Bar Method, if I wasn’t sweating with a heart rate at 70% of max, I didn’t feel I was working out.   I’d run 9 marathons, but the backside of my body was weak and my hip flexors were stressed from chronic overuse. not flat.

I suspect the reason Luke has been bugging me (ever so sweetly) to write a testimonial is because at 74 I have the dubious distinction of being by far the oldest regular Bar Method member in Seattle, and most likely even in all the Bar Method system. My first reaction was, “well, I don’t really have anything different or interesting to add to the inspiring stories everyone has already shared.” But I guess what I can add is my perspective based on my age and my desire to be a healthy role model for my 17 teen and adult grand kids, especially the girls. I kind of feel I’m somewhat of an experiment to see how far and long a person can push their old bod to do this amazing workout.

Three years ago, I broke my left leg in two places, broke my ankle in three places, and shattered my heel.  Recovery was definitely NOT the ‘six to eight weeks’ that the doctor quoted!  Later that year, both of my children married and both of my parents passed away—by the end of 2009, I was drained emotionally and physically. “So it isn’t just for women?!” I said when one of my co-workers, Brynn recommended and raved about the Bar Method. I thought, “Ok, I’ll try it, what do I have to lose!?” I’ll have to give you some background of myself, I came from a small town in Michigan where I lived a very sedentary lifestyle. I didn’t work out, I was never active, and my idea of a good time was a large chocolate shake, a 40 piece mcnuggets and three double cheeseburgers from McDonalds. At my max weight I was 450 lbs.  I was sick–I could barely move, I was extremely unhealthy and uncomfortable in my own skin.

Growing up I played sports, and was blessed with a great metabolism so I never really had to worry about gaining weight. Upon entering college however, I quickly found out that I could no longer rely on my metabolism to stay thin, and so I started a regular workout routine…. But then during the summer after my junior year, I received a shocking diagnosis. I was devastated.

December 23, 2012. I should have been full of Christmas cheer but I had a wake up call at my annual physical that day. My doctor told me I was on the third year of high blood sugar and high weight gain and heading toward diabetes. He said since my hysterectomy the weight gain was the cause of my high blood sugar. He said at 56 I was cutting my life span by 15 years due to excess weight, high blood sugar and no exercise. I was a marathon runner and a national award-winning spinning instructor, but nothing compares to the workout I get at Bar Method. Bar Method is the most efficient, engaging, and empowering use of an hour.  Once I’m at class, there’s no “zoning out” or slacking off possibl—no “down arrow” button the treadmill, slower pace to take, nor resistance to take off the spin wheel— the workout is just foolproof.

When I first began classes I could not get through an entire set of thigh without coming out of it. As a dental professional, I especially appreciate their conscious effort to promote improved posture and training of the “posture muscles”.  Similarly, I was sold when I saw the stall bars that you’re encouraged to usepost-class: essentially you hang from these bars and it feels like spinal decompression (my terminology, but that’s what it feels like!).

My friend Hilary kept talking about this amazing NEW BAR WORKOUT, and telling me that she got up at 5:15am to go to a 6:00am workout.  I thought she was crazy, how could I get up even earlier than I do and fit that in? Well I went to the first class and was HOOKED.

When I took my first Bar class, which typically includes 30 to 40 push-ups, I knew that I hadn’t been working the right muscles and had become lazy in yoga. With the mirrors at Bar Method, I also saw where those extra 10 pounds had decided to rest – it wasn’t pretty but honestly, it was and is just a reminder of what I needed to work on. I was a bit intimidated at first; I’ll admit it-many of the women at Bar Method are super fit. I thought I was the only one in class without a perfect body. But I soon realized there were lots of women in class like me, transitioning to our better selves. I never felt judged and my classmates are friendly.
